Obishikokaang Resource Corporation (ORC) employs a Slash Burning Supervisor who is responsible for seasonal activities typically timed in the spring &/or winter months.
The Slash Burning Supervisor’s duties and responsibilities include supervision and completion of the following tasks:
- Hand-construction of a dirt fire line
- Cutting and removal of trees and woody debris to create firebreaks
- Laying and plumbing of fire hoses
- Water pumping and spraying to cool fuels
- Ignition of backfires to burn out unwanted fuels
- Patrolling for spot fires
- Churning the ashes to eliminate embers (“mop-up”)
- Removal of fire equipment & hoses
- Supervision of 10 to 20 person fire crew
- Ensuring that all requirements of the Health and Safety Act are followed
Job requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Additional relevant post-secondary education, such as an Associate degree in fire science, is preferred
- 3-5 years’ fire-fighting experience
- In-depth knowledge of safe and controlled burns, ignition potential, wildfire suppression tactics and relevant health and safety issues
- The ability to complete on-the-job course work and training provided by the National Wildfire Coordinating group (NWCG), First Aid Certificate training, WHMIS certification and any additional training deemed necessary by the Corporation
- Physical fitness and endurance, as this job involves manual-labor in hot smoky conditions, walking in steep terrain while carrying tools and equipment, and use of tools and ignition devices/torches
- Experience leading a fire crew of 10 to 20 people
