Obishikokaang Resource Corporation (ORC) employs a Slash Burning Supervisor who is responsible for seasonal activities typically timed in the spring &/or winter months.

The Slash Burning Supervisor’s duties and responsibilities include supervision and completion of the following tasks:

• Hand-construction of a dirt fire line
• Cutting and removal of trees and woody debris to create firebreaks
• Laying and plumbing of fire hoses
• Water pumping and spraying to cool fuels
• Ignition of backfires to burn out unwanted fuels
• Patrolling for spot fires
• Churning the ashes to eliminate embers (“mop-up”)
• Removal of fire equipment & hoses
• Supervision of 10 to 20 person fire crew
• Ensuring that all requirements of the Health and Safety Act are followed

Job requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Additional relevant post-secondary education, such as an Associate degree in fire science, is preferred
• 3-5 years’ fire-fighting experience
• In-depth knowledge of safe and controlled burns, ignition potential, wildfire suppression tactics and relevant health and safety issues
• The ability to complete on-the-job course work and training provided by the National Wildfire Coordinating group (NWCG), First Aid Certificate training, WHMIS certification and any additional training deemed necessary by the Corporation
• Physical fitness and endurance, as this job involves manual-labor in hot smoky conditions, walking in steep terrain while carrying tools and equipment, and use of tools and ignition devices/torches
• Experience leading a fire crew of 10 to 20 people
